the good dreams are the ones where lu and i are surfing. we're driving down to san o, or wherever, and out the window we see the tide is up. there are those iron boobs we say, meaning the san o power plant which sits just right of old man's. i make the joke that we are old men on the inside, wanting the long, easy rides down the line, and then dipping backwards towards the ocean. i stood up for the first time here, i say to nobody. i learned to walk on water here, i spoke without words here. lu stands next to me, waxing her board and laughing. she's already made friends with the guys next door and their dog. she's running around smiling and charming everybody. i hang behind awkward and shy, just myself and happy with it. is it okay to surf on your period asks lu. i don't see what's wrong with it i say. what are you worried about? sharks? lu does what she wants but she takes my advice seriously. when we began our friendship i was amazed someone could sparkle so much and still love me. on the outside we seemed like opposites, but we always knew where to meet each other. lu was always laughing before i even finished my joke. we understood each other in an unnameable way. we spoke the same language even though it took us decades to meet. the ocean is juicy today i said. lets gettttt itttttt!
